Menyoal Konsep Keibuan di Indonesia dan Nigeria Melalui Sastra: Pendekatan Komparatif

Desca Angelianawati

Abstract

Bearing children has become one of the most essential aspects in a human’s life. The concept of motherhood is also intersected and varies from time to time upon location. Through qualitative research and library study, this article compares the the concept of Nigerian and Indonesian motherhood through literature. Two selected novels are Ibuk written by Iwan Setyawan and The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta. The findings show that both mothers share similar concepts and representations of motherhood. In addition, those representations are used to maintain the social contructions which legitimise the patriarchal system. The African motherhood may be different with the Asian concept of motherhood in practical, yet mothers will focus on the wealth of their children no matter where they are.
