Abstract

The naming of culinary with Javanese ethnic flair is not without meaning, but has certain values. However, until now there has been no adequate study that reveals these ethnic values. This study aims to describe the types of culinary naming, the multicultural values contained therein and their implications for language education and socio-cultural awareness. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, involving 62 culinary names collected through observation, reading documentation, and notes. Data were analyzed using a social semiotic framework to reveal the context of experiential, interpersonal, and textual meaning. The results of the study showed six main types of naming, such as greetings, number of words, cultural influence, old names (legends), prioritizing location and prioritizing merchandise. These types of naming reflect eight multicultural values; cultural harmony, tolerance, and innovation of tradition. This naming also supports the preservation of local languages, inclusivity, appreciation of local wisdom, intercultural tolerance, cultural adaptation, gender equality, historical preservation, and social community. This finding has implications for language education such as vocabulary learning, semiotics and meaning, communication in cultural interactions, and linguistic creativity. Implications for the aspect of socio-cultural awareness are seen in awareness of cultural diversity, local identity, social interaction, cultural education, and social harmony.
