Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of power in the presidential debate between Joe Biden (JB) and Donald Trump (DT) held at Case Western Reserve University, employing a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The aim of this research is to identify how language is used to construct and maintain power, as well as how each candidate’s rhetorical strategies influence public discourse and reflect their political ideologies. The method involves thematic analysis of the debate transcript to explore language use, interruptions, and discursive patterns. The findings reveal that Trump employed aggressive strategies and direct attacks to dominate discussion, whereas Biden used inclusive and empathetic language to construct a positive public image. The study also reveals that the debate functioned as a platform for reinforcing each candidate’s political ideology). This research offers insight into how language in political debates can influence public opinion and the dynamic of power.
