Juanda Juanda, Iswan Afandi

Abstract

The urgency of preserving nature reserves lies in protecting the flora and fauna within them and maintaining the balance of the wider environment. This research aims to examine ecological issues in the novel Kekal by Jalu Kancana using Greg Garrard's ecocritical approach. The qualitative descriptive method was applied to analyze the nature reserve phenomenon in the novel Kekal by Jalu Kancana, published by Mojok in 2019, with 252 pages. Data collection techniques will be carried out through library research, allowing the extraction of relevant data directly from the novel text. The data analysis technique used is an interactive model. The findings show six ecocritical aspects in the novel: pollution, wilderness, disaster, settlement, animals, and earth. Based on the results of the analysis, the tendency of ecological aspects that appear in the novel Kekal, namely settlement issues amounting to 12.20%, forest destruction issues at 9.16%, animal extinction at 8.95%, disasters at 6.90%, pollution at 5.13%, and earth/global warming amounted to 4.89%. The problem of dense settlements in urban to rural areas has the highest percentage of coverage, which shows that this novel significantly describes or discusses settlements. For policymakers, the findings of this research highlight the urgency of environmental protection. They can be used as a basis for designing more effective policies to overcome housing problems, forest conservation, animal protection, deforestation problems, and anticipating disasters in Indonesia.
